Nordic Bakery
Review: Located in Golden Square, an unusually peaceful part of Soho, is the delightful Nordic Bakery. As soon as you open the door you are overwhelmed by the irresistible smell of cinnamon. It’s like stepping into a mountain hut in the middle of a pine forest after a long hike through the snow in the hope of finding shelter and warmth. The wooden walls are somewhat reminiscent of a Finnish sauna.
If it’s a spot of lunch you’re after, there’s a good selection of open sandwiches, the gravad lax being particularly delicious. Unfortunately, there is no offer on these, so at around £3 a piece it will be a rather light and pricey lunch. I’d recommend skipping on the savoury and going straight for the sweet. The cinnamon buns are undoubtedly the showstealers. Made according to a traditional Finnish recipe they truly are sublime, especially when served hot from the oven accompanied by a gorgeous cup of coffee. Otherwise, the Tiger Cake is the best of the typically Nordic coffee cakes. There’s also a small deli section where you can stock up on various Nordic treats such as liquorice and rye breads. I’ve always found the atmosphere relaxed and the staff friendly.
